Ergonomics, Basic and Advanced Instrumentation, Instrument Sharpening, and Power Scaling   

This 8-hour, hands-on, in-person course focuses on clinical dental hygiene skills, including basic and advanced dental hygiene instrumentation techniques, ergonomic positioning with relation to the patient and the operator, instrument sharpening skills and techniques to improve patient outcomes when using combined hand and power instrumentation. Basic and advanced power scaling techniques will be taught.  Lecture will take place in the Dental Studies lab with the hands-on portion in the clinic. Personal items utilized for instrumentation, such as loupes, are encouraged.  Attendees should wear scrubs. PPE will be provided.

Note: Upon completion of this course, the attendee will receive a certificate of completion for 8 continuing education credit hours that is accepted by New York State.

Course Learning Outcomes

  1. Discuss the proper ergonomic positioning for dental hygiene instrumentation.
  2. Differentiate between basic and advanced dental hygiene instrumentation techniques.
  3. Recongnize dental hygiene instrumentation errors.
  4. Demonstrate proper techniques for sharpening a sickle, a universal curet, and an area-specific curet.
  5. Demonstrate various advanced instrumentation techniques and corresponding alternative fulcrum placement.
  6. Demonstrate proper techniques for Magnetostrictive power scaling.
